The Coronavirus Pandemic: Keeping Your Peace in the Crisis

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Unless you were under a rock for the past few weeks, there's no way you could've missed the whole Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic flooding the media and reaching world-wide attention. Millions across the world have been put under lockdown, put on curfew and other restrictions to prevent the additional spread.

While some on social media have taken it lightly, dubbing the deadly virus "Rona" and other names, others who are directly affected have developed anxiety and have become fearful of what could be brewing next. This post will help put a few things in perspective.

Imagine what it's like for healthcare workers? As a counselor, the halls of my job are dominated with conversation about the notorious plague, lately, that thousands are scrambling from all over the country. Just look at the supply chain for certain products in the past few weeks, for example. Toilet paper was completely absent from the shelves of almost every local supermarket and low on food while people prepare to be quarantined in the next few weeks. People's fear-based buying habits have definitely exacerbated the problem. Heck, even baby wipes were out of stock. Look how the virus has played on our anxieties.

Some of the complaints recently from local residents in Newark, NJ are fear of running out of food during their quarantine. Others take the bus daily, and are in fear of being exposed to the virus. Among other worries are concerns of family members dying from the disease, which has hit 11,500 cases in the United States on Thursday and a death toll of 9,700 internationally according to Business Insider.

Although, this is a serious matter and doesn't take the place of taking precaution - like for instance, staying home - finding peace in a crisis is important for your mental health and survival. Here are a few posts from social media and other speakers to help relieve some of the stress. It doesn't help to protect yourself if you're worried or in fear.

I love this because it references a powerful verse of the Bible. And honestly, if you believe in God's word and what he says, then you believe that God has promised your protection. In times such as these, it's important to have faith in a higher-power or faith period.

I never really though of it this way, but he really has me thinking about God's plans and purpose in our lives. #BETHECHURCH

It has never been wise to worry about things out of our control. And it is important to make a difference in the world and to help where you can. Be gentle with one another in these times.

Lastly, this too shall pass, keep trusting God in hard times and believe his promises will come to pass.
